Second Harvest

keeping good food out of the landfill
catching food that gets overlooked

Our Second Harvest Program collects food from grocery stores that would otherwise be wasted. A bruised apple, misshapen zucchini, dented can or foods with best before dates which don’t reflect the actual expiry are redistributed to community members that need it most.

Reclaiming food for good use

Our grocery stores have to turn products over quickly and we’re capturing the food that gets passed over in the shuffle.

Most of the reclaimed foods we collect are used for the immediate production of community meals or donated to our community “free” fridges which are set up in several locations around the island.

We collect food from Country Grocer, Thrifty’s, Tuesday Farmers’ Market, Barbs Bun, Salt Spring Coffee, Natureworks and local farms around Salt Spring Island.
